1. High school
I did it all: marching band, Latin club, academic league (varsity captain), theater (techy not actor), National Honor Society, valedictorian... Hell, I even wrote other people's papers, and I loved standardized tests. I took the SATs four times, ostensibly for fun! If it was dorky, I personified it in high school. I often wore a shirt with the word "GEEK" emblazoned on the back. To high school. Why not just strap on a bullseye? :)
I go on IMDb daily, often multiple times. I've committed bits to memory. I proselytize for IMDb, singing its praises to anyone who will listen. I'm just slightly less enthusiastic about IMDb than Tom Cruise is about Scientology. Yeah.
3. AIM, the internet, and so forth
One of my close friends is a guy I've never met. *waves to gabrielyulaw* We've been AIM friends (with occasional phone calls) for about nine years, I think. I also have profiles on Live Journal, My Space, and Friendster. I have more than five active e-mail addresses. I know because I check five of them daily.
4. Grammar and words
I. Love. Grammar. Strunck and White's Elements of Style is one of my all-time favorite books. And I love words. I love big words and small words and rare words. I love people who use words I don't know, and I love people who ask me to define the words I use. I love knowing the exact word I want and being sure the nuance is right. I love the conservation of language that comes from knowing enough words to say what you mean in the fewest words possible. I love learning new words and rediscovering old words. Another website I visit on a daily basis is dictionary.com. I love editing/proofreading because I get to give other people the words they need but couldn't think of at the time.
If no one cares, I probably know it. Just today, I managed to work some useless facts about leprosy into a conversation with my manager. Later, I explained an html error on a random vendor site to her. WOW! What a dork! I'm that jackass who always says, "Hey, did you know *something that has nothing to do with anything*? Also, *some other stuff that would only be valuable if you were on Jeopardy! or Who Wants to be a Millionaire*." If it's important, I won't remember it. If it's just damn odd, it's tattooed on my brain the moment I first hear it. In that same vein, did you know this website exists and I used it to learn 75+ decimal places of pi? (There's one for e, too.)
Honorable Mention: Math
I do Algebra for fun. Sometimes, when I'm bored, I solve for the quadratic equation; it helps me remember how to complete squares when I think I've forgotten. I'm not a big enough math dork, though, so this one didn't officially make the cut.
Um... I'm not going to make five of you do this, but you might choose to do it on your own. It's up to you, folks.
Thanks for thinking of me, learan! :) I'm honored to have made your dork list.
