I'm looking at ads for choco-hazelnut latte cookies and coconut butterscotch fudge cookies. They both sound like a little too much going on for one cookie. Maybe Betty Crocker should relax.

15 cents short

I want a Coke. I always want a Coke. I'm not even sure why people still say things to me like, "Cynth, do you want a Coke?" Of course I do! Just hand me one, or point to where I can go get it.

Anyway, I counted the console change (I'm hanging out in the car between classes; it's what I do), and I have 3 quarters, 3 dimes, and 11 nickels. Sodas here are stupidly expensive, and it's $1.75 for a bottle of Coke. Crap! I only have $1.60.

But that's not even true. I've also got 17 pennies and a Canadian quarter. I don't even have to know the daily exchange rate to know that's more than 15 cents. I think the machines in this country need some sensitivity training. They discriminate against foreigners and pennies, which are statistically among the poorest of our currency. Typical. The politicians don't care because pennies can't vote. It's a travesty and a gross miscarriage of justice.

I really want a Coke.

Clouds

During my drive home tonight, the clouds were brush strokes; it was like driving into an oil painting. If I remember my sixth grade science meteorology unit correctly, they were cirrus clouds. The colors were amazing. At gloaming, the setting sun mutes some colors but illuminates, lightens, brightens, and heightens contrast for others. It was clearly striking, since I neither notice these things nor write like this.

nothing really

Made some kind of stew today. It had stew mix vegetables (parsnip, turnip, leek, carrots, onions, celery, parsley, dill), Golden Onion soup mix (don't recommend it), a whole lot of mushrooms, cubes of beef (marinated in balsamic vinegar), a bottle of Guinness, and some barley (a late addition). It's all right. Not great. Kind of bland or something. Maybe fresh garlic next time? I don't know. When I realized it was bland, I dumped in some salt, hot pepper flakes, and garlic powder. Nothing.

Did anyone else know Calcutta is now Kolkata? Apparently, this happened in 2001 and may have been nothing more than a correction of a British misspelling. Interesting. Also, the AKC isn't allowed to call Jack Russell Terriers Jack Russell Terriers because of a copyright dispute with an anti-AKC group, so they're now Parson Russell Terriers.

...

OK, I'm done.

It's that time again...

The e-mail came out kind of dumb this time around, but I'm walking for ALS. Here is the sponsorship link (I hope):
http://alsphiladelphia.kintera.org/faf/r.asp?t=4&i=304413&u=304413-256134378&e=2774185895

I'll put the whole wonky e-mail behind a cut.

me,

On October 10, I will be participating in The ALS Association's Lehigh Valley Walk to Defeat ALS™. I have recently accepted the challenge to raise funds to help the Association accelerate the discovery of the cause and cure of Lou Gehrig's Disease, and to provide programs and services that are so desperately needed by ALS patients and their families.

Imagine: as you are busy with your career, your family, and your community responsibilities, you become unable to speak well. You fall inexplicably. You have trouble picking up papers or using a pen. You tire very easily. You seek medical counsel, but are given no satisfactory answers. If you can imagine this, then you start to understand the beginnings of ALS, or Lou Gehrig's Disease.

Unfortunately, the beginning is the best part of the struggle with ALS. It gets much worse. Relatively quickly - usually within two years - the patient becomes unable to speak, to move, to swallow. Finally, the patient becomes unable to breathe. Most patients die within five years. Yet, through it all, for the vast majority of patients, their minds remain unaffected. Essentially the ALS patient's mind is trapped inside a helpless body.

My hope is to be one of the top fundraising participants and bring many friends and family with us on Walk Day! To do this, I need your support therefore I am asking you to support my Walk team by making a gift or by walking with me.

It is faster and easier than ever to support this great cause by making your tax-deductible donation online using the link below. Simply click on the link below to visit my personal fundraising page and donate directly online or join me as a Walk participant.

You may also choose to send your contribution in the form of a check. Please make all checks payable to The ALS Association, Greater Philadelphia Chapter and send them to me at the following address:

{{Insert your personal information here}}

Name

Address 1

Address 2

City, State, Zip

Phone

You can also send donations directly to The ALS Association at 321 Norristown Road, Suite 260, Ambler, PA 19002. When sending to the office, please include a note that says the money is for the Lehigh Valley Walk to Defeat ALS, team (insert team name here) and for me as the walker.

Thank you again for supporting me in the fight against ALS. I appreciate your generosity and participation and will continue to update you with my progress as Walk Day nears.

Sincerely,

(Insert Your Name Here)

Follow This Link to visit my personal web page and help me in my efforts to support ALS Association, Greater Philadelphia Chapter

******************************************************************************

Some email systems do not support the use of links and therefore this link may not appear to work.
Design by Lil

Lily is a licky cat -- she licks everything a lot. Her latest victim is one of my throw pillows. These are fuzzy, bordering on furry. I can't force it to go against the grain with my hand (and I'm certainly not going to lick it), but Lil managed to lick a 6" x 3" section into a new, damp, matted configuration.

The pwning of Magic Erasers

I like to think I use Magic Erasers (OK, Amaze Aways -- we bought the generic store variety) like Chuck Norris would.* The images on the box suggest an unused Magic Eraser, a partially used Magic Eraser, and a Magic Eraser ready to be discarded. In my opinion, if you have any Magic Eraser left to be discarded, you fail! You're not doing it right! Here are the images on the box as compared to a Magic Eraser I used earlier today:

I wasn't even done with that one; I just took a break to get a picture, so I could educate you people. Here's what it looked like when I was done with it -- a small amount of Magic Eraser shrapnel scattered on the floor:

* -- This hypothetical assumes that the scuffs weren't scared off the walls the minute Chuck Norris walked into the room. It would never happen in this universe. If physicists can have theoretical massless ropes and frictionless pulleys, this theory can have Chuck Norris using a Magic Eraser.

Where my geeks at?

I need a surge protector/suppressor for a 20A outlet (w/ a T-slot ... or just one of the pluggy things horizontal), and I'd like for it NOT to be $90. :(

http://www.amazon.com/Panamax-M2A20-20A-Surge-Protector/dp/B00006HYQA

The air conditioner plugs into a funky 20-amp outlet (she said, as if she knew what it meant,) and occassionally trips the circuit. Circuit breaker is in the landlord's unit, so I'd prefer to have this thing go through some kind of surge protector dealy, so I can flip it back on myself without making a phone call or dealing with people. OK? OK.

FML

WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO SAY:

Mr. Mechanic:

In the month and a half since I maxed out my credit card to have you "fix" my car, I have had to take it to the dealership and call AAA twice. AAA cannot find a leak in my flat tire; they told me it could be leaking air from around the rim or else someone let the air out intentionally. They recommended that I keep an eye on it to see if it went flat again, and now it has.

Your hired man's telling me I should've brought the car in is not helpful, nor did I solicit his opinion on the matter. Your telling me to call AAA back to fill the tire again, so I can drive it over to you reeks of unmitigated gall. Why don't you come fill the tire or send Mr. Helpful?

By the way, the sound you told me was not mechanical and suggested I remedy by playing my radio to avoid hearing it turned out to be a loose air hose. I wonder if those are connected to or anywhere near the a/c condenser you replaced. Awfully convenient that they became loose only after your "repairs."

Let me be perfectly clear: I want you to fix this tire and put it back on my vehicle, but if that process is going to cost me a dime, I am taking my business elsewhere. You have gotten quite enough of my money already, and I'd rather die than give you another cent.

WHAT I PROBABLY WILL SAY:

Oh, gee. Hi. How are you? If it's not too terribly much to ask, could you maybe please fix this, golly gee whiz? I'm sorry. Thanks.

I hate when I can't find things on the internet!

There was a short, most likely from Animaniacs, in which a little plane wants to be jet, but his prop plane father disapproves. They don't talk; they just kind of beep at each other.

It is not Little Johnny Jet! That is much, much older, and most of the planes talk.

I have exhausted every Google search term I can come up with here. I'm going crazy. Someone -- anyone -- help me find this damn cartoon! I swear it exists!

I thought my name had never been uttered in popular music, but it's in a little song you may have heard of called "Dance to the Music" by Sly and the Family Stone. Sweet. How did I miss that for so many years?!
