In any case, here's what happened today. I was kind of depressed for no apparent reason -- maybe it was just because Thanksgiving is over. Katie came home from work, and we watched the news for a bit. During the news, they went over traffic and mentioned an accident on the Schuylkill. (By the way, in PAspeak, that's pronounced SKOO kuhl.)
It was at this point that I suggested Schuylkill would be a good name for a fish. A few hours and $100+ later, we have a 20-gallon tank in the living room filled with black gravel, fake Greek/Roman ruins, and de-chlorinated water filtering and heating away. It has to get all regulated and whatnot in the next 24 - 48 hours before we can go buy Schuylkill and the other inhabitants.
Murphy (because we like it)
Ruth and Naomi (particularly if one fish follows another around)
Caesar (almost have to with the tank decor)
Jonah (it's kinda funny)
Rhiannon (dude, Fleetwood Mac)
Cassandra (a la decor)
Athena (also decor inspired)
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego (particularly for 3 of the same fish)
Even though the tropical fish we want aren't saltwater fish, they're still kind of a pain. Every week, we'll have to change 10% of the water with more de-chlorinated, like-temperatured water. Every month, we'll have to change 2/3 of it. For the first couple/few weeks, we'll have to check the temperature, pH, and levels of nitrite and nitrate daily/every other day. Thereafter, we'll have to check all those things ... weekly? I forget already! The light has to be on 12 hours a day, the gravel has to be vacuumed monthly, and the fish have to be fed twice a day.
There's more, but I don't remember it. I don't even remember the specific tropical community fish we wanted, aside from Endler's Livebearers (which are tiny and fluorescent and adorable).
